European Patent Office increases fees

March 13, 2016

The Administrative Council of the European Patent Organization has decided to increase the fees of the European Patent Office. This decision shall enter into force on 1 April 2016. Details may be seen from the document http://www.epo.org/law-practice/legal-texts/official-journal/2016/01/a3/2016-a3.pdf.

The fee increase takes place every two years and for this time the fee increase is moderate. Thus, the renewal fees to be paid until grant of a European patent will increase only between 5 EUR (for the 3rd year) and 15 EUR (for the 8th and each subsequent year). This corresponds to an increase of approximately 1%.

The new fees apply to payments made from 1 April 2016. It is therefore advisable to pay renewal fees, examination fees and fees for grant becoming due in April prior to 1 April 2016 in line with the lower tariff still applicable before the due up to 1 April 2016.
